Lola Mercedes Parker

Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. is a national business and professional sorority established in 1929 by Mrs. Lola Mercedes Parker in Chicago, Illinois. She called together six friends to help her form an organization that would offset the effects of the Great Depression on countless black females who were recently thrust in the job market in white collar positions. She envisioned meeting the needs of black females who were doubly penalized by their race and gender. Thus, Alpha Chapter was formed in Chicago. The sorority has grown to have more than 3000 members, and is an international organization with over 100 chapters in 85 cities and the US Virgin Islands. Although business remains our primary focus, females of all professions are welcome to join our ranks.
